just when your
guard goes down
when you know that
incredible happiness
the sun looks
brighter
your laugh more
contagious, when
fellas smack your
back and say
“brother,
you are untouchable”
that’s when
a careless mistake
an invisible vapor
drifts undetected
into your lungs
and that tender life
constricts with awareness
and your ground
is actually air
and when you look down
it’s over
to pay attention is
the lesson my brother

i like the high times too! this actually was written after a run in with some sort of dangerous chemical one random day shopping with my mom – and it just really made me stop and take pause…ah us poets must always pay attention 🙂

Your story about the chemical reminds me of the day in Biology lab in college when someone spilled mutagen all over and then proceeded to touch multiple surfaces including the doorknob until several hours later admitting the mistake. Frightening how fragile and interconnected we are.
